A Natural Anxiety Medicine that you May Not Know About

DHH-B is a natural anxiety medicine* that is made from the bark of the magnolia tree. If you haven’t heard of magnolia bark, your’e not alone. It’s flown just under the radar of natural medicine trends, but it is has been a powerful traditional medicine for centuries. Its bioactive compounds have been shown to address conditions from inflammation to weight management, brain health, better sleep, stress reduction, and (most importantly for this discussion) anxiety.

Benzodiazepines (like Valium) are among the most-prescribed medications* in the United States. They inhibit anxiety by acting on the central nervous system, producing sedation, muscle relaxation, and lower anxiety levels. While they are indeed very effective in combating anxiety, benzodiazepines have many well-known side effects, including: decreased motor function and respiration, confusion, and withdrawal.

Magnolia bark, and the powerful extracts from it, have been shown to address anxiety in similar ways to benzodiazepines without the unwanted side effects.

What is Magnolia Bark?

We all know the beautiful magnolia flower, but the bark of the tree from which it comes actually contains several, natural compounds that act as anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-allergic agents. The most well-studied and known of these compounds is honokiol. This compound has neuro-protective and neuro-modulating effects. It has therapeutic potential in anxiety, pain, cerebrovascular injury, epilepsy, and cognitive disorders including Alzheimer’s disease (1).

HOW MAGNOLIA BARK WORKS:

Boosts GABA: GABA is a neurotransmitter that exerts a calming effect. Increased GABA activity quiets excitatory neurons in the brain, helps reduce anxiety, and promotes sleep.

Activates Cannabinoid Receptors: One study found that  the extract and its main bioactive constituents, magnolol and honokiol, can activate cannabinoid (CB) receptors.  These receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system and are located throughout the body. This system plays a role in immune health, pain relief, and disease-prevention. Activation of these receptors helps to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and elevate mood, among many other benefits.

Is a Powerful Antioxidant: Magnolia Bark has high antioxidant properties that lower levels of inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain and throughout the body.

Is an Adrenaline Inhibitor: Bioactive compounds in magnolia bark can reduce adrenaline, a hormone strongly associated with stress, which stimulates vigilance and alertness. Other research indicates magnolia bark may suppress unhealthful levels of cortisol, another significant stress-related hormone.

While Magnolia Bark and the extract honokiol work as an anxiolytic, (a medication, or other intervention, that inhibits anxiety), showing to be effective, it is not as strong as pharmaceutical options. That is…until now.

DHH-B: A Powerful Anti-Anxiety

DHH: B (or dihydrohonokiol-B) is a higher-dosage of honokiol that has been shown to produce an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect without change in motor skills or respiration (2). It has been used by many to decrease daytime anxiety and works well to facilitate sleep. In fact, it is 20x the strength as the natural Magnolia Bark (Honokiol) supplement.

DHH-B is a powerful natural anti-anxiety medicine without the side effects presented with anti-anxiety medications, like Benzodiazepines (e.g. Valium).

*Any patient currently undergoing regular treatment with benzodiazepines or other antidepressant medication should consult a medical practitioner before substituting DHH-B for these medications, as stopping benzodiazepines or other antidepressants abruptly can result in seizures and other harm to patients.
