Bioidentical Hormone Pellets

Bioidentical hormone pellets are one of the quickest, easiest, and most consistent ways to replenish and optimize hormone levels for both women and men. Today we will discuss why we need this therapy, how it compares to other forms of hormone therapy, and what you need to know before getting started.

Why do we need hormone therapy?

As men and woman age, our hormones begin to change. Some hormones increase, such as Cortisol (the stress hormone) and Insulin (the hormone that regulates glucose in the body). Other hormones, like thyroid hormones, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, melatonin, DHEA and growth hormones decrease with age.

When these changes happen, both men and women can experience inconvenient, and in some cases debilitating symptoms. These symptoms include:

  • Weight Gain
  • Lack of Energy
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Headaches
  • Joint Pain
  • Low Libido
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Urinary Incontinence (in women)
  • Hot Flashes (in women)
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Muscle Loss
  • Bone Loss
  • and more

Many of these changes can happen over an extended period of time, which allows many of us to accept them as normal signs of growing older. However, most of these changes are due to an hormonal imbalance that can be corrected and optimized so that you can age your best.

What are “bioidentical” hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are manmade hormones that are identical to those that your body produces on its own. The hormones are made from plant, animal, and mineral sources, providing a more natural alternative to synthetic hormones. Bioidentical hormones have some distinctly different, potentially opposite, physiological effects compared with their synthetic counterparts, which have different chemical structures. Synthetic hormones have been known to produce side effects (like weight gain, irritability, and mood swings) that mimic and can be worse than those associated with an hormonal imbalance in the first place.

However, the differences do not stop there. Data have indicated that bioidentical progesterone is associated with a diminished risk for certain cancers, compared with the increased risk associated with synthetic progestins (1).

What are bioidentical hormone pellets?

Bioidentical hormone pellets are small, rice-sized pellets that are placed under the skin to release a specific measured amount of hormones over an extended period of time. Pellet therapy is the only form of hormone replacement therapy that is considered to be long-term. The pellets maintain their effectiveness with a balanced release of hormones twenty-four hours a day for several months.

This consistent release of hormones mitigates the fluctuations that can occur with other forms of hormone replacement therapy. Human error (missing a dose, taking too much or not enough) is all too common with other forms of HRT. Bioidentical hormone pellet therapy is an effortless way to keep your body balanced.

What are the drawbacks to pellet therapy?

Fortunately, there are only two drawbacks to bioidentical hormone therapy. The first is that the skin around where the pellet has been inserted may become irritated or itchy for a period of time. This is a rare occurrence, but it has occurred in some patients.

The second relates to the same human error as that which can occur with other forms of hormone therapy, such as creams, troches (small lozenges that dissolve between the cheek and gum over a period of about 30 minutes), pills, injections, etc. Because pellet therapy can last so long (3-4 months for women, and 5-6 months for men), some people may forget they are there! Missing an appointment for your next pellet insertion could delay the steady stream of hormones that is helping your body to run optimally.
